The Two Southbanks
One suburb, split between the river-facing city and the streets where everyday Southbank gets on with it.
Southbank is often understood from its river edge: restaurants, theatres, hotel foyers and a continuous view back to the central city. Walk two blocks south and the picture becomes more complicated.
City Road carries the traffic, services and older industrial traces that the promenade edits out. Between them sits a dense residential neighbourhood, vertical and sometimes strangely quiet at street level.
Read the seams
The most interesting walks cross the suburb rather than following it. Move from Sturt Street to the river, or from Boyd Park toward the arts precinct, and the changes in scale become legible. Southbank is less a single strip than a set of parallel conditions compressed together.
