The Arts Precinct Without a Ticket
A compact route through forecourts, public art and overlooked architecture—no booking required.
Southbank holds an unusually concentrated collection of cultural institutions, but the spaces between them are worth treating as a destination in their own right. Start near the National Gallery of Victoria and move slowly through the public edges of the precinct.
Look for the changes underfoot, the framed views toward the city and the way elevated roads and towers repeatedly interrupt more formal civic gestures.
A route made of thresholds
Continue toward Arts Centre Melbourne, then cut across to Sturt Street. The best moments are transitional: a stair landing, a shaded forecourt, a glimpse of rehearsal rooms, or the sudden quiet behind a major venue.
Finish at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Its exterior gives the walk a suitably direct ending—an object that reads differently from each approach.
